From 1970 to 2001 Lewis A. Phelps served as Professor of Music at University of Mount Union, Alliance, Ohio, where he taught Voice, Music Education, Music History, World Music, Vocal Literature, Opera Workshop, and Music Appreciation. A native of Mesa, Arizona, he earned bachelor, master, and doctoral degrees in music at the University of Arizona, Tucson; he studied counterpoint and composition with Robert McBride.  From 1963 to 1967 he served as choral director at Point Loma High School, San Diego, California.  After retiring, he and his wife, Jean, spent a year as unpaid volunteers at the Brigham Young University Center for Near Eastern Studies in Jerusalem.  In 2006 Jean and Lewis moved to Bountiful, Utah; for the past several years Lewis has taught for the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at the University of Utah.  He recruits friends who help him present a “Musicale” at the Bountiful Davis Art Center every Thursday afternoon in February.
